Storytelling Wedding Photography: Farmers Image Of The Week
When I speak to couples about what they want from their wedding photography, I often explain that some of the most powerful images will capture parts of the day they didn’t even see.
As hosts, they’re busy. They’re being pulled into conversations, logistics, hugs, paperwork, nerves. There are entire mini-narratives unfolding around them that they won’t witness in real time. And often, their favourite photograph ends up being one from a time when they weren’t even in the room. They know what they did at their wedding; they don’t know what everyone else did.
This image, submitted by Charlotte Preece of Indie Love Photography, is exactly that kind of storytelling wedding photography frame.
Charlotte shared that she was influenced by John Dolan’s advice in our online class about “staying with the bride.” But in this instance, the bride was momentarily occupied with the registrars in the next room. Staying with her didn’t mean physically hovering. It meant remaining mentally tuned in and switched on.
And what she found is magic.
From a compositional standpoint, this image is beautifully balanced. The room is doing a lot of work here. The parquet floor literally creates arrows that pull us toward the centre of the action. The bridesmaids act as pillars to frame the scene.
Whatever that strip of fabric is, it acts as a visual connector between generations. It gives the image motion, and without it, this would still be a lovely candid. With it, it becomes storytelling.
Choosing black and white was also the right decision. It strips the scene back to gesture, expression and light. There’s no distraction. Just narrative.
Technically, this is a great example of environmental storytelling wedding photography. But more than anything, this image demonstrates awareness.
Charlotte didn’t check out because the bride stepped into another room. She didn’t lower her camera or scroll her phone. She stayed engaged. And because she did, she captured a small, unscripted story that the bride would not have witnessed herself. It is heartfelt and gently humorous.

“ Instead, I had the voice of John Dolan in my head saying to stay with the bride (or in this case the people waiting for the bride)”
Hi Lisa, I’ve submitted this image as it’s one I keep going back. It’s from a wedding last summer at No.131 The Promenade in Cheltenham. It was taken when the Bride was with the registrar. She’d been an absolute age and the flower girl was getting restless. The Mother of the Bride was keeping her entertained whilst the Father of the Bride kicked back for forty winks.
This is a moment of the day I rarely get to shoot as I’m quite often dashing to the ceremony venue at this point. Earlier in my career, I would have also been reluctant to pause at this point in the day, instead choosing to go into the ceremony room and prep. Instead, I had the voice of John Dolan in my head saying to stay with the bride (or in this case the people waiting for the bride) and so I stepped back and watched this interaction unfold. I love the layers to this image and how it adds another layer to the story of the wedding day.
