Farmers Image Of The Week: Bold Group Photo with Direct Flash

This week’s Farmers Image of the Week is a bold direct flash group photo from Bozena Leray, and it’s serving us a masterclass in adaptability, creativity, and a whole lot of fun. Shot at a stunning destination wedding in Italy, Bozena found herself needing to shoot the group photos later in the evening due to the wedding running behind schedule. Instead of seeing this as a limitation, she turned it into an opportunity to create something striking and modern.

The Rise of Direct Flash

In the past, flash was mostly reserved for dancefloor shots, but currently, we’re seeing it used all day long. Direct flash has made a huge comeback, and photographers are embracing it for everything from detail shots to portraits. In Bozena’s image, the direct flash technique gives the shot a high-end fashion vibe. The black-and-white treatment takes it a step further, delivering a timeless yet contemporary feel.

The Perfect Mix of Elegance and Playfulness

What makes this image sing is the mix of polished composition and playful energy. Bozena captured some straight-faced, editorial-style shots, but then let her subjects loosen up, resulting in this joyful, dynamic group photo. The bridal party’s expressions and poses are full of life, showing that weddings don’t always have to be serious affairs. This is a reminder that the experience you give your clients is just as important as the final image. Clearly, this one was a blast to create.

Lighting and Technical Brilliance

Bozena’s lighting choice is spot on. By positioning the flash high, she avoided harsh shadows on the subjects’ faces. This angle also flatters the jawlines, enhancing the polished, editorial look. Shooting in black and white adds contrast and drama, making the subjects pop against the textured stone backdrop.

Why It Stands Out

This image stands out for its adaptability and execution. Bozena took a potential obstacle – running out of daylight – and turned it into an advantage. The result is a photo that feels fresh, fun, and effortlessly stylish. It’s a great reminder that sometimes, the unexpected can lead to your best work.

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t shy away from using direct flash throughout the day; it can elevate your images with a fashion-forward feel.
  • Encourage your clients to loosen up and have fun during group shots. The experience will shine through in the final images.
  • Adaptability is key. When plans change, embrace the challenge and let creativity lead the way.

Congratulations to Bozena Leray for this fantastic shot – a perfect blend of style, spontaneity, and skill.

WHAT Bozena SAID

By the time we got round to group photos it was past sunset. There was no other choice but to use the flash. As it was a big wedding party

This wedding took place in Puglia, Italy. It was the only day that week that it was forecasted to rain. The day started with a thunderstorm, which passed by the afternoon, but the whole schedule was pushed back.

By the time we got round to group photos it was past sunset. There was no other choice but to use the flash. As it was a big wedding party, I decided to use some chairs, just to fit everyone in and create a more dynamic image.

THE TECH TALK

Bold Group Shot with Direct Flash: Farmers Image Of The Week by Bozena Leray

I started learning flash two years ago and although it’s been trial and error journey, I can’t imagine going to a wedding without it now.

I usually use my flash off camera, as it gives me a lot more flexibility. I also tend to use it in TTL for convenience, if there is enough ambient light.

I positioned the flash high above my head and pointed at the wedding party.
