THE ART OF NORMAL
Thrive Edinburgh by Shutter Go Click

“THE ART OF NORMAL – creativity THAT isn’t about finding the perfect location – it’s about seeing magic in the places others overlook. ”
At Thrive Edinburgh, we’re all about offering a variety of experiences for photographers to build unique portfolios – and this year, Ryan from Shutter Go Click brought an unforgettable one. Known for his playful, surreal approach to wedding photography, Ryan created a hands-on shoot that pushed photographers to see the beauty in the everyday, the “normal,” and even the gritty.
Instead of steering couples toward polished, more obvious backdrops, Ryan led our attendees through the streets of Edinburgh to seek out unexpected magic. Think graffiti walls, traffic cones, wheely bins, old stonework, and neon signage. It was a masterclass in how texture, colour, light, and imagination can turn the urban ordinary into something extraordinary.
THRIVE
THE SHOOT EXPERIENCE
I don’t want to take your photos by purpose-built pagodas or overused staircases. I’d rather be in a car park or by some dirty wheely bins:
The Art Of Normal
Ryan shared his addiction to symmetry & colour & all-out frickin’ fun amidst an urban setting. It’s all about surrealism & soul. Also his in-camera techniques too – using prisms, double exposures, reflections, and bold symmetry to frame his couples with pure creativity. His shoot was filled with laughter, colour, energy, and a strong sense of story.
You could feel his background in street photography shaping every frame, blending movement with structure and injecting a real, tangible sense of fun into the experience.
Our real couple models embraced the playful brief: the bride wore a short, puff-sleeved white dress paired with trainers for a relaxed vibe, and the groom stood out in a bold, bright orange suit. The vibe was joyful, rebellious, and totally modern- exactly the kind of alternative wedding portfolio content that gets you noticed.
If you’re someone who wants to push your creative boundaries and embrace more editorial, urban storytelling, this shoot with Shutter Go Click is packed with inspiration.
