Farmers Image Of The Week: Lake District Cloud Inversion
This cloud inversion photo by Jo Greenfield is our Farmers Image Of The Week, produced when photographing an engagement session in the Lake District. The couple stands together on the peak, embracing being together and present in the moment, while Jo steps back to capture the scene with simplicity and care.
The composition is thoughtful, with the rocky foreground leading the viewer’s eye toward the expansive landscape. The soft cloud inversion below wraps around and contrasts with the rugged terrain, and the natural tones of the image enhance the connection between the couple and their surroundings. Their warm, earthy clothing complements the environment, adding to the overall harmony of the image.
Jo’s approach to giving the couple space to enjoy the view adds a genuine quality to the image. The decision to frame them from behind emphasises the moment’s intimacy, highlighting their partnership and shared experience without overcomplicating the story.
This image is a great example of how engagement photography can be adventurous and meaningful. It feels like this captures a connection between this couple and the world around them. I’m sure they will never forget this truly extraordinary experience and you can sign me up right now for a mini-break in The Lakes, please.

“We reached the summit, 360 degree views of the lakes, Sam had never been to the lakes before so it was a special moment. On the way back down they decided to parkour over rocks (which was hilarious)“
This was a pre wedding shoot for my NYE 24 couple. When we arrived at the location there was the most stunning inversion. (We take what we can in the lakes at the moment, because it’s usually rain)
I did my normal route and the inversion started to break up so suggested we hike to the top of the mountain. Sam the groom was happy as he was desperate to reenact the lion king scene with the dog off a ledge.
We reached the summit, 360 degree views of the lakes, Sam had never been to the lakes before so it was a special moment. On the way back down they decided to parkour over rocks (which was hilarious) Sophia absolutely stacking it a few times and then naturally ended up at the edge (thankfully they slowed down at this point) .
Both knackered and needing a rest they just stood here and looked out over the inversion. I was miles away catching up and just snapped it. Bit of pot luck really.
THE TECH TALK
Farmers Image Of The Week: Jo Greenfield Lake District Cloud Inversion
It was a very cold, very frosty day. So aside from the correct outdoor gear and briefing the couple of what to wear (as well as colours and safety) I carried a few spare batteries as my cameras soak up the battery in the cold (and heat)
That view is lovely but there’s a fair few hotels down by the lake so I was purposely shooting quite wide to blur the hotels. I would have shot 1.2 but it was quite a bright day and I didn’t want to lose all the clouds completely.
I wore a holdfast but not ideal when climbing mountains as they tend to swing. If this was an elopement I’d have shoved the cameras into my jacket to stop them swinging when climbing.
I find the best moments are just letting the couple be themselves, small suggestions (go leap off a mountain) and the best performing posts (on insta) tend to be the ones where no identifiable features are on show. I’m not sure why, I guess it allows the viewer to see themselves there rather than a random couple. (Not that it’s about Instagram, but thought it was worth a mention)
