Farmers Image of the Week: Mastering Pockets Of Light in New York

This week’s Farmers Image of the Week is a mesmerising photo taken in New York by the incredibly talented Lauren Knuckey. This image is a brilliant example of how finding and using pockets of light can transform a scene into something spectacular.

Lauren’s use of light and shadow here is absolutely spot on. The dramatic contrast immediately draws your eye to the bride, highlighting her beautifully against the intricate patterns and textures of the staircase. The way the light creates a path leading directly to her is extraordinary. It not only makes her the focal point but also adds depth and dimension to the photograph.

Finding and Using Pockets of Light

What’s particularly impressive about this image is Lauren’s knack for finding those perfect pockets of light. In an environment as complex as this, it would be easy to get lost in the architecture. But Lauren has expertly found a spot where the light falls just right. This skill is important, especially in settings where natural light is limited or particularly challenging. By positioning her in this exact spot, Lauren ensures that the bride is beautifully lit amidst the darker surroundings.

The composition is another standout feature. The geometric lines of the staircase create a visually engaging pattern, adding a sense of order and balance to the image. The bride’s placement within this pattern makes her pop while still being part of the grand structure.

Emotional Impact

Beyond the technical brilliance, this photograph has a lovely emotional quality. The bride’s serene expression and posture, combined with the majestic setting, create a narrative of quiet reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of New York. It’s a powerful reminder of those intimate moments that can be found even in the grandest of spaces.

Lauren Knuckey’s work here is a testament to her ability to see beyond the obvious and capture the extraordinary. Her keen eye for light and composition has resulted in a photograph that’s both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. It’s a fantastic example of how thoughtful positioning and an understanding of light can elevate a simple moment into something truly special.

Hats off to Lauren for reminding us all of the beauty that can be found in the interplay of light and shadow. This image is a worthy addition to our Farmers Image of the Week series, showcasing the artistry and skill that defines great wedding photography.

WHAT lauren SAID

“A bridal portrait of lovely Anna at the Beekman Hotel in New York. “

A bridal portrait of lovely Anna at the Beekman Hotel in New York.

Anna & Luke chose to elope in a city close to their hearts and booked this beautiful setting as a place to begin their day. After returning from their ceremony for a celebratory cocktail, the midday light shining down through the atrium was absolute magic! We were actually taking some couple portraits when Anna’s strap popped, so Luke went off to grab a safety pin and this happened.

THE TECH TALK

Farmers Image of the Week: Mastering Pockets Of Light in New York

Whenever you are given beautiful light, try to use it! I enjoy playing with light and shadow lots, and love how you can create a range of photos within one location. The light was very harsh as it was around midday with no cloud cover, so I made sure to expose for the light on Anna in order to keep the detail.
