Thrive: Jo Greenfield Elopement London Gallery

Earlier this year at our Thrive conference, we had the pleasure of hosting a day of Shoot Sessions with our brilliant speakers. Someone who fully embraced the urban setting for elopement style photography was the talented Jo Greenfield. As Jo is also a filmmaker, her session focused on showcasing how to craft a cohesive narrative right in the heart of the city. With London as her backdrop, Jo demonstrated the power of planning and storytelling.

Jo’s vision was clear: to present an elopement session as a series of interconnected scenes, each contributing to a larger narrative. It’s an approach that speaks directly to modern couples looking for a unique and stylish way to have their elopements recorded.

Crafting a Narrative Through Scenes

Jo’s approach was methodical and intentional. She planned the session as if she were directing a film, with each setup contributing to the overarching story of the couple. This method not only creates a more engaging and cohesive gallery for clients but also allows photographers to work more efficiently and creatively.

Embracing the Urban Landscape

One of the standout elements of Jo’s session was her ability to find beauty and narrative potential in everyday urban settings. By keeping everything within a close proximity, she showcased how photographers can maximise their environment without the need for extensive travel.

The Cinematic Touch

Jo’s use of cinematic techniques brought a new dimension to her elopement photography. From the composition and lighting to the couple’s interactions, every element was carefully curated to enhance the cinematic feel. This not only made for visually striking images but also helped convey the emotions and story of the couple in a compelling way.

“I enjoyed Jo Greenfield’s shoot session as she took a lot of time to explain her creative process and why she does things, angles, camera manipulation etc.” Christie Veitch

Tips for Urban Elopement Photography

Inspired by Jo’s masterclass, here are some tips to help you elevate your urban elopement photography:

  1. Plan Like a Director: Think of your session as a movie, with each setup contributing to the overall narrative. Plan your shots and scenes in advance to ensure a cohesive story.
  2. Your Surroundings is Your Set: Embrace the urban landscape and find beauty in everyday settings. Look for interesting textures, architecture, and lighting opportunities that can enhance your photos.
  3. Keep it Close: Maximise your time and efficiency by choosing locations that are in close proximity to each other. This allows for a smoother session and more time to focus on capturing great moments.
  4. Cinematic Techniques: Experiment with cinematic techniques such as dramatic lighting, creative compositions, and storytelling through interactions. This adds depth and emotion to your images.
  5. Engage Your Couple: Encourage your couple to interact naturally and enjoy the moment. Genuine emotions and interactions make for the most compelling photos.
  6. Think Like a Cinematographer: Shoot your Mise En Scene, wide, mid, close and extreme close-ups to give your story both context and meaning.
