Drone Wedding Photography at a Scottish Estate: Farmers Image Of The Week

This week’s Farmers Image Of The Week is a stunning example of drone wedding photography from Melody Joy. Captured at a destination wedding in Scotland, this image doesn’t just show off the location it leans into it, making it a core part of the narrative. The couple had chosen Scotland for its significance to the bride’s heritage, and Melody’s framing ensures that connection is literally grounded in the landscape.

Why This Image Works

We’ve seen drone shots of wedding venues before, but what stands out here is the clarity of intent. It’s not just about showcasing the grandeur of the setting, although the formal garden layout and the Georgian building absolutely deliver on that front it’s about anchoring the couple in that setting. The venue’s symmetry gives a strong backbone to the composition, but it’s the couple placed perfectly at the base of the intersecting paths that makes the viewer pause.

There’s a balance here between scale and intimacy. You get the full sense of the venue, its structure, the carefully maintained hedges and trees, the late summer light, but your eye still finds the couple straight away.

What We Can Learn From It

Drone photography at weddings often risks losing the personal in favour of the epic. But this image is a reminder that you can have both – you just need to plan your framing carefully. Think less about showing everything, and more about showing the relationship between the couple and their chosen place.

It also shows the value of a photographer having conversations with their couples ahead of time. Melody knew this venue meant something deeper to them, and that’s come through in the shot. That’s the power of intention.

A Note on Technique

Compositionally, the central perspective lines draw your eye straight to the couple, textbook leading lines without being too obvious about it. The monochrome treatment enhances the sense of timelessness and strips away any distraction from colour, leaving the viewer to focus on form, balance, and emotional connection.

This is a wedding portrait that looks just as good in a full gallery as it would printed large and framed.

WHAT Melody SAID

I think it’s important to focus on the values of every couple, and the venue and scenery of this country was really important

“This couple was from LA, and the bride’s father is originally from Scotland.

So they wanted to get married in the home country where her dad grew up. They chose this venue for it’s stunning countryside garden and beautiful, Scottish scenery.

So for this reason, I made sure to allot some more time with the couple during a 15 min band break during the dancing, to pop outside for just a few more minutes of photos. I think it’s important to focus on the values of every couple, and the venue and scenery of this country was really important, so opted for outside images at night to focus on the landscape with drone versus my usual indoor flash photos to end the night inside of the wedding venue.

The drone and the couple being very happy to have a breath of fresh air after the Ceilidh dancing, really helped with us having plenty of time to put a drone up and to give them a nice stroll just as the sun was setting behind the estate.”

THE TECH TALK

“When using a drone, it’s always nice to either have more time to launch and land it yourself, or to have your second shooter launch and land it, but hand it over to you when it’s up for you to direct and choose the angles, and then during the launch and landing/packing up, you can go straight back to capturing the couple strolling around on your digital or film cameras that are on your body.”
