Joyful Wedding Recessional Photo
Sometimes we select a Farmers Image Of The Week because it’s beautifully composed or technically impressive. Sometimes it’s the styling or use of a clever location. And then sometimes, like this image by Mark Horton it’s simply for the joy.
This joyful wedding recessional photo just stopped us in our tracks. There’s something about the unapologetic delight radiating from both the couple and the crowd that reminds us what an immense privilege it is to do this job. To be there, camera in hand, while people live out some of the best days of their lives, and to hand those feelings back to them through photographs.
There’s a lot that makes this shot sing. The motion blur adds energy, the couple are unmistakably the focus even in the midst of a full room, and let’s not overlook the wardrobe: that moss green velvet suit and dramatic pink gown deserve their own standing ovation. Also the technical skill; Working in such low light with fast movement isn’t the easiest.
But let’s take a moment for the real MVP skill behind this shot: walking backwards. If I ever opened an academy for wedding photographers, that would be class one. Nobody teaches it, but we all have to do it. Through crowded aisles, with unpredictable lighting, while composing and exposing perfectly and ideally without falling over.
This is the kind of image that instantly brings back the feeling of this part of the day, not just for the couple, but for everyone who was there. And for those of us viewing it from the outside, it’s a reminder: wedding photography is sometimes about movement, mood, and the magic of people caught in a moment of utter celebration.
Well played, Mark.

“ I was going for pure chaos and emotion. They nailed it.”
I knew that Aggie and Liam were going to do the first kiss then immediately come down the stairs.
As they are both so extroverted I knew they’d be giving it the big’un. So I stood half way down the aisle and waited until they got close enough so I could get them filling the frame and seeing their emotions.
I wasn’t bothered about it being straight, I was going for pure chaos and emotion. They nailed it.
THE TECH TALK
Joyful Wedding Recessional Photo: Farmers Image Of The Week

I shoot 1.4 90% of the time. In this case the music hall is so dark I had to so I bummed my iso up and exposed for the lights as they came down the stairs.
I knew I could bring back the shadows in post. I stayed on the 24mm the hole time just spraying as I looked at the back of the camera and walked blindly backwards.
