Farmers Image of the Week: The Three Elements That Make Great Wedding Photos
In this week’s Farmers Image of the Week, Adam Luto humbly credits luck, but we know that in photography, luck is often what you make of it. The three key elements in most of our winning images are a great location, great light, and a great connection between the couple. As photographers, we have a hand in all of these components.
You pick a good spot for your subjects, guide them to feel more at ease and connected, and then either add light or, as Adam has done here, judge where it’s likely to appear and wait for it.
Location:
The library setting is truly special. The dark wood and intricate details create a dramatic and elegant backdrop. The elevated position of the couple adds a sense of scale and grandeur, highlighting the beauty of the location.
Light:
Adam’s use of light here is excellent. The natural light filtering through the skylights and spotlighting the couple is magical. It focuses attention on them while the rest of the room stays in shadow, adding intimacy and emphasis.
Connection:
The connection between the couple is clear. Their embrace shows a deep sense of love and comfort. Adam gave clear direction so that they could focus on each other instead of worrying about being on camera.
Technical Excellence:
The composition is balanced, with the couple centred and the architectural lines drawing the eye to them. The exposure handles the bright light and deep shadows perfectly, and the sharpness and clarity of the image enhance its impact.
This photograph by Adam Luto shows how thoughtful planning, patience, and a bit of anticipation can lead to an outstanding image. It’s about being prepared and knowing what to do when the right time arrives.
Congratulations to Adam for capturing such a beautiful image and for highlighting the importance of location, light, and connection. This photo is a great addition to our Farmers Image of the Week series, showcasing the artistry and skill that define exceptional wedding photography.

“The light just beamed through these incredible skylights and just bathed them in a pool of beautiful light “
As my couple wandered around this balcony above the historic library within the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, I asked them to meet in the middle and connect with each other however felt natural.
As they got to the middle, the light must have come out from behind a cloud (we’d had rain and hail earlier in the day) the light just beamed through these incredible skylights and just bathed them in a pool of beautiful light. I literally shouted, “don’t move an inch” to my couple and told them just to spend some time in that spot, to be free and to take a moment together.
The sun lasted a minute maximum and then disappeared, went behind a cloud or a building or the slight wrong angle but I was so lucky to capture it.
THE TECH TALK
Farmers Image of the Week: The Three Elements That Make Great Wedding Photos
I exposed for the couples faces as they were bathed in light and happily plunged the surroundings in to darkness.
