Farmers Image Of The Week: Artistic Wedding Dress Photography

This image by Lauren Knuckey is a perfect example of how to elevate the traditional ‘dress shot’ into something deeply narrative-driven and emotionally resonant.

Since I started in the industry 25 years ago, the ‘dress shot’ has been a staple. Sometimes you turn up to bridal prep, and it’s already been staged somewhere. Other times, you hang it from a chandelier, a nearby tree, or a window frame – yes, I’ve done all of those. Let’s face it, shopping for a wedding dress can be a big deal, and it’s often the star of the show on a wedding day, so it deserves time in the spotlight within a gallery.

However, I’ve come to appreciate dress photos that involve more of a storytelling element than “my photographer/videographer hung it here for a photo.”

My all-time favourite dress photo is this one by the incredible Canadian photographer Jennifer Moher, who has been a speaker at our conference. Jennifer’s image is so incredibly nuanced and this frame from Lauren Knuckey reminds me of it – in the way the dress and the bride are equal subjects in the image. The relationship between them is what this story is about, as well as the prelude to the dress taking up its significant role for just this one day. This image speaks of both the build-up that has already been and the excitement of what is about to happen.

Lauren’s framing is very deliberate, with the dress positioned beautifully by the light source, allowing its texture and shape to shine. The soft natural light streaming through the window gives the scene a cinematic quality, accentuating the drapery of the dress. Meanwhile, the bride sits at the mirror, quietly contemplative. There’s a clear narrative here – this isn’t just about the dress or the bride separately, but about the moments of anticipation and preparation they share.

What makes this image truly special is its quiet simplicity. Lauren has left space for the lived-in details of the room – the curtains pooling softly, the bed, and the shadows cast across the floor. These small elements add an air of authenticity, making the image feel less posed and more observational.

This isn’t just a photo of a dress; it’s a story about the bride, her choices, her moment of quiet before the whirlwind of the day. Lauren has done a beautiful job of balancing artistry and emotion in equal measure

WHAT Lauren SAID

This image was captured as we were all talking away with excitement brewing and Gisella finishing up her own make-up..

It was a very relaxed September afternoon hanging out with Gisella before her intimate wedding to Tristen in the Tuscan countryside.

THE TECH TALK

Farmers Image Of The Week: Artistic Wedding Dress Photography by Lauren Knuckey

I found this quite a tricky one for lighting! It was bright sunshine outside, Gisella was slightly in darkness, and her dress in the window light.

I focused on exposing for the dress, meaning Gisella was not completely in shadow and a key part of the story of the photo too.
