FARMERS IMAGE OF THE WEEK

Kat Mervyn

A Lesson in Patience and Simplicity in a Bridal Portrait

This stunning image by Northern Irish photographer, Kat Mervyn, exemplifies the power of simplicity in bridal portraits. The photograph captures a serene moment, using window light to create a fine art feel. The drama of the bride’s voluminous sleeves is emphasised by her graceful pose and the thoughtful framing of the shot.

Kat’s keen eye for detail is evident in the clean composition of the image. By removing a framed picture from the wall behind the bride, she ensured that nothing distracts from the subject. This attention to the background is a crucial lesson for photographers – sometimes the simplest changes can elevate an image to a work of art.

The image’s tranquility speaks volumes about the importance of patience. Kat waited for the perfect time to capture the bride when she was truly in the moment, fully ready, and displaying genuine emotion. This point in the wedding timeline is pivotal for creating timeless bridal portraits.

The editing of this image is another aspect that deserves attention. Kat has applied a subtle, yet effective touch to enhance the natural beauty of the scene. The soft, muted tones create a dreamy atmosphere while maintaining the integrity of the natural light. The careful balance between highlights and shadows adds depth to the image, emphasising the delicate texture of the bride’s gown.

Kat’s decision to use a minimalist background draws the viewer’s focus directly to the bride. This clean aesthetic, combined with the ethereal quality of the window light, transforms a simple bridal portrait into a piece of fine art. The result is an image that feels both intimate and timeless, showcasing Kat Mervyn’s exceptional talent and artistic vision.

This photograph serves as a beautiful reminder that less can indeed be more. Kat’s ability to harness natural light, simplify the scene, and apply thoughtful editing results in an image that is both dramatic and serene, making it a worthy winner of this week’s Farmers Image of the Week. Her work is a testament to the power of patience, attention to detail, and the art of subtle editing.

WHAT Kat SAID

“It was just going to be a little detail shot originally “

The bride wanted a photo of her sleeves.

The room she got ready in was super dark with just a high-up window and was pretty cluttered so I took a picture off the wall and had her look out the window while she made a few movements with her arms to see which way the sleeves fell best.

It was just going to be a little detail shot originally but I liked how the light fell on her wee peaceful face.

THE TECH TALK

A Lesson in Patience and Simplicity in a Bridal Portrait

Don’t be afraid to move furniture around, I had to wait a long time to get her on her own as it was final touches, so be very patient and don’t rush them.
