Now, here’s a striking image that effortlessly takes the title of ‘Image of the Week’, by using a drone to capture a landscape. Taken by the brilliant Kirsty Mackenzie, this photograph showcases an iconic Icelandic chapel in all its glory but from an aerial perspective.
Firstly, let’s address the sheer audacity of shooting with a drone. It’s a perspective that turns the everyday into the extraordinary, and Kirsty has harnessed this power to perfection. The way the chapel stands in solitude against the vastness of the landscape is poetic and would not be as impactful from the ground.
The timing of the shot is impeccable. That golden hour glow bathes the scene and envelops the couple in warmth, despite the wintery scene. It’s the kind of lighting that can’t be replicated, only waited for – something Kirsty has done flawlessly.

This photograph was taken during the LARK workshop in Iceland back in February this year. It was the first time I had properly flown my drone to use on a photoshoot, and I was excited and nervous.
The black church in Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an iconic landmark in Iceland, and I’ve seen a lot of professional photographs of this location, so I was trying to think of a different way to capture this building.
The sun was rising and giving a hazy light on the sea in the background, and the drone allowed me to see this location from a different perspective. As I saw the couple framed in the first doorway to the church, I angled my drone to try and get them in the perfect frame with the hazy sun and sea in the background.
