In the run up to Farm Week 16, we will be asking all of our mentors these Ten Questions, to get to know them a little, to discover some new facts about them and because we just want to know more about what makes them tick.
When it came to planning our very first Farm Week in 2013, I started by making a list of the top three photographers that I wanted to lure there. From that list, one never replied, one said thanks but no thanks and the other said Hell Yes! That was Brooke Davis and luckily she has also said Hell Yes every year since as her classes are always a big hit. Based in Utah, Brooke first caught my attention with her Non Wedding Shoot that kind of shook the industry up quite a bit. To say I'm a huge fangirl would be an understatement as I am always utterly blown away by her work and how much she raises her game year on year. Even her family shoots are incredible and I often meander through her blog for a shot of inspiration.
Can you remember the first camera that you ever owned and if so tell us about it?
I sometimes think about how amazing the Instagram accounts would have been of people who are not around anymore, like Andy Warhol… His feed would have been incredible. Who do you think would have had a great Instagram?
I love the 1950s and think Frank Sinatra would be amazing or any of the poets of the past. Like Edgar Allen Poe.
What’s the one piece of advice that you have been given that proved to have had the most influence on you?
Dont please everyone. Let those that truly appreciate your work become your clients.
What function do you wish your camera could have that it doesn’t already?
A wind machine... THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!
If you were not a photographer what job would you be doing?
I would still be in a creative field. Painting or writing song lyrics.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement so far?
Name one book that you think we should go out and buy.
What’s the strangest thing you have ever been asked to photograph and did you do it?
Male boudoir and HELL NO... I was worried I would be on the news found locked in a trunk. (car boot)
If you could go back and say one thing to yourself aged 20, what would it be?
It's okay, Breathe, Take your time. It will happen.
What question do you wish we’d asked you?
Do you wear pants when you edit? ... since you didn't ask I guess we will never know....
(Brooke asked me to point out by pants she means trousers!)
Brooke Davis is offering two workshops at Farm Week 16. The Family Sessions on 09/02 which is an inspirational day looking at how family portraiture can go way beyond traditional poses and be a creative and profitable business. She is also teaching an all day wedding masterclass Finding Your Voice 11/02 which will be an intense exploration of how to shoot for both you and the client, how to connect with people and draw out raw emotion.
