Attending A Photography Conference Solo with Confidence

Tips for Attending Photographer Conferences Alone

If you’re nervous about attending a photography conference alone, read this

Let’s talk about attending photography conferences alone. It’s a topic close to my heart because I think I am an ambivert when it comes to these things. The only conferences I’ve attended on my own are those I’ve spoken at – to hundreds of people (utterly terrifying BTW). Despite being able to speak in front of a crowd, the idea of striking up conversations with strangers one-on-one used to fill me with dread.

But here’s the thing: attending conferences solo can be a game-changer for your career, and it’s something I would love you to embrace if you are sitting there now wondering about booking yourself onto something.

Some strategies for navigating conferences solo like a pro

One of the most rewarding aspects of running Thrive is witnessing the connections that attendees make with each other. Seeing industry bonds form and friendships blossom is what it’s all about for me. And that’s why I design the conference with this in mind, thinking about what would make it easier for someone like me to turn up alone.

Every year, I receive emails from a small number of ticket holders who feel hesitant about attending. Life stuff happens, but I wonder if self-imposed blocks also come into play. That’s why I want to share some strategies for navigating conferences solo like a pro.

Firstly, reaching out ahead of the conference is key. Join the community around the event, whether it’s through social media groups or pre-event meet-ups. Can’t see any happening? Be the person that organises it. In typical ambivert fashion, I find having a role gives me a little more confidence.

At Photography Farm, we have an active and supportive Facebook group, as well as a dedicated sub-pop-up just for Thrive attendees. It’s a great way to connect with fellow attendees before you even set foot in the venue.

Remember, you’re not alone in feeling nervous about attending solo. Others might be in the same boat, so why not turn your nerves into an opportunity to be useful to them? See if you can spot other people who have arrived solo and chat with them to ease any awkwardness.

Get an idea ahead of time where the social touchpoints are at the conference. At Thrive, we ensure there are plenty of breaks and food served within the event, so there’s no stress about sourcing refreshments or feeling left out of groups heading off for lunch.

Tips to help you navigate photography conferences alone:

Anxiety can often get in the way, but it’s important to remember why you bought the ticket in the first place.

Focus on that instead of creating blocks in your mind about going.

Set Intentions: whether it’s to meet three new people or attend a specific talk or shoot or get a new album supplier sorted.

Be Open To Connections: Have some open-ended questions/conversation starters already in mind when you get there. Be open to new experiences and prepared to step out of your comfort zone, I dare you.

– Practice Self-Compassion: Acknowledge and validate any feelings of anxiety or discomfort that arise during the conference. Remember that it’s okay to take breaks, recharge, and prioritize your well-being throughout the event.

Stick Around: I know that it’s maybe more tempting to get in and out with minimum fuss but how about joining in on social activities after the learning? This can be fun and you’ll usually find the industry chat continues so you’ll get even more tips!

Finally, I’d say do this:

So, if you’re feeling nervous about attending Thrive or any conference alone, know that you’re not alone in feeling that way. Also know it’s an opportunity for growth, connection, and inspiration. Last year Rebecca Carpenter asked for volunteers and hardly anyone raised their hands as they didn’t know what the task was. It turned out that she gave them cash in an envelope to illustrate that our fear often holds us back from opportunity.

It was such a great way of seeing it so now let’s talk about the next Thrive. Am I going to see you there, thriving alongside your fellow photographers?
